Tenney Mountain
4th ANNUAL BRENDAN GRANT FOUNDATION SKI / SNOWBOARD RACE
Held Saturday, 18 March 2006 in Plymouth, NH
Saturday, 18 March 2006: A crisp late winter day with plenty
of sunshine greeted skiers and snowboarders of all ages at the Fourth Annual Brendan Grant Foundation Ski/Snowboard
Race held at Tenney Mountain in beautiful
Plymouth, NH. Cold temperatures helped keep the field course fast and
and the race times competitive. The best of two runs were
taken by each competitor.
The fastest times
of the day were recorded in the male skiers division. The fastest
racer of the day was Brian Schlager of Norwell, MA with a time 16.04
seconds. Next was Carl Anderson Jr. of Hebron, NH 16.11 seconds,
followed by Bruce Blair of East Greenwich, RI at 16.39 seconds, respectively. The fastest female racer of the day was
Jamie Blair of East Greenwich, RI at 17.14 seconds. The Blair
family came ready to ski, as the second overall fastest female skier
behind her Mom was Samantha Blair of East Greenwich, RI at 18.18
seconds. Third fastest overall female went to Jill Marshalka of
Canton, MA at 19.34 seconds.
The times from the previous two years were posted, and skiers
and snowboarders competed against each other and against themselves in an attempt
to improve on their personal best time. Awards were provided for the fastest male and female skiers in six age brackets, and for the fastest
male and female snowboarders. Awards were also presented to the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son pairs.
This was truly a family event in the spirit of the Foundation activities.
In addition, the racers were treated to a barbecue once
they finished their runs.
The winners in the each category with the fastest combined speeds, starting first
with the snowboarders, were as follows:
Female Snowboarder: Rosie Bauder, Columbia NJ (30.43).
The fastest female skiers were:
Female Skier Age 8 & Under: Nikki Blair, East Greenwich RI (20.34)
Female Skier Age 9 to 12: Samantha Blair, East Greenwich RI (18.18)
Female Skier Age 13 to 17: Aliyasa Murphy, Norwell MA (20.06
Female Skier Age 18 to 29: Jill Marshalka, Canton MA (19.34)
Female Skier Age 30 to 45: Jamie Blair, East Greenwich RI (17.14)
Female Skier Age 46 & Over: Ellen Schlager, Norwell MA (20.04)
The fastest male skiers were:
Male Skier Age 8 & Under: Noah Smialek, Plymouth NH (21.31)

Male Skier Age 13 to 17: Eric Schlager, Norwell MA (16.99)
Male Skier Age 18 to 29: Brian Schlager, Norwell MA (16.04)

Several years of experience with this winter racing event has demonstrated
that perhaps the most competitive and sought after prize is for the fastest parent/daughter and parent/son
combinations. This year, the trophies for the fastest family pairs
were taken home as follows:
Parent/Daughter: Bruce and Samantha Blair, East Greenwich RI (17.28)
Parent/Son: Kyle and Robert McDonald, Sudbury MA (17.60)

It was all smiles on the Giant Slalom race
course, as well as at the award ceremony and raffle/silent-auction that followed.
Special thanks to Mike Herz, Carl Anderson Sr. and Carl Anderson Jr. for all their work running
the course, and for Don Smialek, Sr. who ran the grill. Click here for the full
story on last year's ski/Snowboard Race.
Tenney Mountain is located near Plymouth State College, and the ski area
is easily accessible to the greater New England region. It provides
a great venue for all who were able to attend and participate in the race,
and for the other events held throughout the day. See the Tenney Mountain website
for more information. It has always been
a favorite of the Grant Family, and Brendan often skied here. This was the last place that Brendan had last enjoyed the winter
sport of skiing.
This year's event continued the tradition of being a wonderful winter/spring family
success, with lots
of fun had by all who attended. We hope to
see you next year!
