4th ANNUAL
BRENDAN GRANT WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Held Saturday, 8 January 2005 in Belmont, MA

The Fourth Annual Brendan Grant Wrestling  Tournament was held at Belmont High School all day on Saturday 8 January 2005.  A typical New England winter day with light snow falling greeted all participants and supporters  for this particular tournament, and it was a great day to be indoors and enjoy the sport of wrestling.

Once again the tournament was a success on all accounts.  This year the format was similar to that of previous year's, when eighteen high school teams participated in this extensive tournament.  These teams were from the following New England area high schools: Arlington MA, Belmont MA (host team), Catholic Memorial (Boston) MA, Concord/Carlisle MA, East Providence RI, Hamilton-Wenham MA, Hingham MA, Josiah Quincy Upper School (Boston) MA, Keefe Tech (Framingham) MA, Lexington MA, Malden MA, Melrose MA, Nashua North (Titans) NH, Newton North MA, Wakefield MA, Watertown MA, Wellesley MA and Winthrop MA.

At the end of the day, the first place team winner was newcomer Concord/Carlisle.  The Patriots, as they are known, captured an impressive 173 team points.  Finishing second with 164 points was last year's first place team, East Providence, RI, and placing third was Newton North at 157.5 points.  The remaining teams finishing 4th through 18th were: Catholic Memorial (145), Arlington (138), Wellesley (135), Malden (117), Melrose (109.5), Wakefield (107.5), Hamilton Wenham (89), Keefe Tech (87.5), Hingham (73.5), Nashua North (69), Watertown (61), Belmont (44), Lexington (40), Winthrop (13) and Josiah Quincy Upper School (11).  The excitement of the day for the locals came when host team Belmont Captain Adam Howe won his 119 weight class, battling through a string of tough opponents.  All the team scores and winners brackets can be found on the Belmont Wrestling Website.

Previously referred to as the Belmont Invitational  Wrestling Tournament, this event has for the last 24 years been one of the premier High School Wrestling gatherings of its kind in the Northeast region.   The first Belmont tournament was held in December 1981 with eight teams participating, and was renamed in Brendan's honor in 2002.  Brendan Grant was a devoted member of the Tournament's host wrestling squad during all four of his high school years, and during the 1999-2000 season he was one of the team captains that led the squad to one of their more successful seasons in years.  Click here for the story about the Brendan Grant Wrestling Tournament held in January 2004.

Overall, this year's 2005 invitational wrestling tournament was once again a great success.
